11 years ago, we started Tonkean with a simple-yet-ambitious goal: to fundamentally change how enterprises operate.
Today I’m excited to share that we’re taking a massive leap forward in that mission: Tonkean is being acquired by Coupa.
Coupa is the industry-leading platform for autonomous spend management. Tonkean is the enterprise standard for end-to-end agentic orchestration. Together, Tonkean and Coupa will now provide what are by far the world’s most powerful agentic orchestration capabilities.
This is a bold step into the future, not only for Tonkean and Coupa, but for the enterprise.
Here’s why we took it—and what comes next.
The nature of enterprise work is changing.
Companies across the world are rapidly shifting from a traditional SaaS-based operational model, where it is incumbent upon humans to compensate for the limitations of siloed technology systems, to an agentic one, where humans operate as orchestrators, coordinating autonomous agents across policies and connected systems end-to-end.
With Tonkean’s enterprise orchestration engine and Coupa’s proprietary $10 trillion dataset, enterprise G&A teams will own, for the first time, a fully connected digital workforce of autonomous AI agents—as well as a seamless way to coordinate complex work across policies, systems, agents, and people.
Though we wouldn’t have articulated it at the time, this is the shift that we built Tonkean to help facilitate.
Enterprise technology did not work for the people. Much more, we as people worked for our technology. Our goal was to shatter that paradigm and replace it with something not only more efficient, but more strategic.
Today, our platform is core to the operations of some of the world’s largest and most innovative Fortune 500 companies. Now, Coupa is the perfect partner to bring what we’ve started to thousands more worldwide.
Of course this is true within procurement, where Coupa has 20 years of transformation experience.
But, as we see it, the potential of this partnership transcends procurement. It is, we think, a seminal moment for the whole enterprise.
For all current Coupa and Tonkean customers, nothing material is changing at all. Tonkean is staying Tonkean, but now with the greater leverage of the Coupa ecosystem. No customer is being asked to move platforms or re-implement.
On the Tonkean side, we will continue serving all our different customers. We will keep building. To protect our momentum and culture, the Tonkean team will continue to report to me and in the same structure. This ensures we maintain our unique DNA while gaining the full Coupa scale, resources, and support.
Our mission, in other words, stays the same. We will just have many, many more resources and the world’s most powerful agentic global trade network to help us pursue it.
Personally, I could not be more thrilled for Tonkean to be joining Coupa. Tonkean and Coupa have long been deeply aligned, from our shared AI-first mindset to Coupa's ambitious culture to the enterprise customers we already support together.
On a personal note, I’m immensely proud of the Tonkean team and the 11 years of hard work it took to get to this moment. I’m incredibly grateful to our customers and partners who built Tonkean alongside us. More than anything, I’m fired up for the future.
We can’t wait to show you what it looks like.
PS... As I was writing this, I went digging into the Tonkean vault. It's been a wild 11 years. For as fired up as I am about the future, I also enjoyed these "blasts from the past." I hope you do, too:
